Road to Hana

Road to Hana

Sightseeing, Adventure

Hana Highway, Route 36 and 360

A complete trip along the Road to Hana consumes the entire day, but is world-renowned and worth doing at least once! You can drive yourself or take a tour (or with the tour, drive one way and take a helicopter flight back). You’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches, beautiful ocean vistas, lush forests, and so, so many curves! Hana is lovely but drive 12 miles past Hana to Oheo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park and do some exploring (check their website for closures before you go). Consider using a guide app on your phone to narrate your trip and highlight the sights along the way – the Road to Hana is really about enjoying the many little things the journey has to offer!

Haleakala Sunrise

Haleakala Sunrise

Sightseeing

Haleakala NP, Summit Entrance, Route 378

If you're getting up very early anyway due to the time change, you might want to catch the strikingly beautiful sunrise at the summit of Haleakala Crater as the sun rises over the clouds. It’s very cold until the sun comes up (take warm clothing) and is almost a two-hour drive away from Wailea Ekahi. Remember the air is thinner at 10,000 feet! You can stay near the parking lot or hike for miles along the nature trails in the area.

Haleakala NP – Summit

Haleakala NP – Summit

Sightseeing, Hiking

Haleakala NP, Summit Entrance, Route 378

Deeply sculpted and richly colored, the landscape will be unlike any you have known. Spend a few hours hiking in the cinder desert landscape or a few minutes looking for native birds in the shrubland. Whatever you choose to do, you'll be surrounded by native Hawaiian plants and animals. The mountain summit is one of the only easily-accessible areas of Hawaii where rare and endemic species survive and thrive. Bring warm clothes and be prepared for all types of weather; also bring sun and rain protection. Elevation at the summit is 10,000 feet.

Haleakala NP – Kipahulu

Haleakala NP – Kipahulu

Sightseeing, Hiking

Haleakala NP, Kipahula Entrance, Route 360

The Kipahulu District can be accessed by driving 12 miles past the town of Hana on the Hana Highway. This area of the coast has been inhabited by native people for hundreds of years. Visitors are treated to views of waterfalls, sweeping ocean vistas, and Hawaiian cultural experiences. Enjoy your time among vibrant, lush vegetation and overlooks offering views of the breathtaking coastline. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, monk seals, dolphins, seabirds and humpback whales (December through April). Be prepared for hot, humid weather year round. The weather can change rapidy; bring sun and rain protection. Visit the website for details of the hikes in the area.

Skyline Trail & Makawao Area

Skyline Trail & Makawao Area

Mountain Biking

Haleakala NP Summit and Makawao

If you're a very experienced cyclist and would like to try a more adventurous mountain biking trip, consider descending Haleakala on the alternative route of the Skyline Trail. The trail starts at the summit near the observatories and follows a dirt/gravel access road through volcanic rock before getting into excellent single-track riding through the lower forest on the Mamame Trail. It ends with a fast descent on smooth road with many switchbacks. The logistics are a little difficult because you need to leave a car at the bottom (Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm or all the way back in Makawao) or otherwise arrange pickup. There are no tours or shuttles available for the Skyline Trail. Krank Cycles in Makawao can set you up with MTB rentals and directions. Pro tip – avoid the entrance fee for Haleakala National Park by saying that you're only accessing the Skyline Trail.

Further excellent mountain biking can be found near Makawao and includes the Makawao Forest Reserve and the Poli Polikula Forest Reserve. Krank Cycle maintains trail information and will have directions on how to access the trails.
